Thanks to the Don (Pasquale) for this week's prize.

Can't see a theme, but a number of solutions were somewhat unfamiliar words that I had to look up or ponder to confirm. Puzzle solidly on the gentle side, especially the top half, but the bottom half and the lookups kept it out of "easy" territory. Definitely a break after last week's Enigmatist beatdown.

FOI 6, LOI 13.

COD 14 over 24, 20 and 22d.

The letters in column 9 spell out a word, but after gazing at it for a while I concluded it's a coincidence rather than a Nina. 😉

A lot more gentle this week. I concur geeker, Definitely a few words unknown to me including 1a. I haven't got 12a or 24a yet and I suspect they might be also.

Rocky, 12 will likely be an unfamiliar word.
24a is actually well-known, but you need to use a less "obvious" abbrev. for South Africa.

Thanks Pasquale.

Finished at NE corner; for some reason, didn't remember nanny connection till the very end.

Rocky, 12 and (did you mean 22a?) are indeed uncommon or at least unfamiliar to me. Definitely an easier puzzle.

Hi Darla. No I actually meant 24a but 22a I'm also thinking is one I don't know. I'm checking my crossers for 24a because I'm not seeing it.

And there you have it. I'd put the wrong letter in one of my down crossers. 24a done. Just a few in the SE and 12a to get.

12a is a US (orig. indigenous) word, not common.

Done though not sure 12a is right. How is it supposed to parse. I have a three letter survivor of flood but can't see the rest.

FOI 5d. LOI 12a (unsure). COD the very witty 3d.

Thanks Pasquale for improving my vocabulary and providing a fun solve.
