Hi Mellini. I think the definition is "Mechanically produces" as a verb.

But I'm totally stuck on 1A & 2D, despite crossers. And I can't parse 5D. Hints welcome.

In exchange, 1a, definition is a type of fly, with the words 'to sea', both endless (losing their last letters), then those 3 letters repeated.

Incidentally, I'm another previously regular Observer reader who gave up buying the printed paper, and I'm having problems accessing Everyman on my phone, including being told to rotate my device - whatever its orientation .... so thanks for the pdf link each week
And I also want to thank whoever pointed out that the paper is available free online with Pressreader using a uk library ticket - I can still read a couple of the commentators whose articles I enjoy.

Barry C. 1, 2, 2. Well known short phrase for a journalist including a two letter abbreviation. Solution is the past participle of making a contact a friend on Facebook. (That sentence is far more complicated than the word!)

Single letter for Dutch (repeated) inside A (from the clue) and two letters for a journo.
I’m not clear on the social media context.

A journalist (usual 2 letter abbreviation) bored by (inserting) twice the initial letter for Dutch. The definition is how a social media account holder enabled a new friend to subscribe.

I agree with nicoladawn - only got round to this on Weds afternoon, stared at it blankly for ten minutes then filled in quite quickly. "Stimulating" covers it, and quite funny too.
