Jogamel -- when you're looking at what crossers you have, do bear in mind the second sentence of the preamble...

If you've already considered that and want an actual hint, the def is in the latter part of the clue.

(having said that, I am yet to actually parse that one although I am 100% sure I have the right answer!)

I think it parses as follows. The extra letter is in the first word. The remaining letters of that word are a Scottish noun meaning the first 3 letters of the answer. Beat is used as a verb of 4 letters, way down in the Cambers entry, with the last letter missing.
Two pretty obscure fragments but the definition is very clear.

Lumen, it's an odd-looking, slightly ugly word, defined by the last word. There's a very useful 'thousand' to start with, an everyday short word for 'race' (up = ....), and the 'river' and 'speed' give the remaining two letters.

I'm stuck in the NE corner, 13A might get me back on track. "Drive away, turning right to left in short race (5)". One of the 'R' s must be removed. I have ????L, although there might be a clash.
