I'm very confused by 11ac, what is 'rather' doing? Otherwise all done/parsed, thanks Dave

Dave, rather (as in somewhat) is 4 letters (2 words) in the middle of a word for get away.

No-one’s mention 10a which I thought was particularly clever.

Akg, I also looked in vain for a theme. The grid’s not special btw, it’s in the grid library.

Another publication celebrated a notable puzzle number milestone this week with a themed puzzle.

I note that Guardian puzzle 30,000 will appear this Thursday. I wonder which setter will have the honour of setting and how it will be marked. Araucaria set puzzle no. 20,000 and Enigmatist no. 25,000.

My guess would be Paul who I believe is now the most prolific Guardian setter of all time but we shall see.

And it’s a Genius week!

Comic Eric is a reference to a specific person and accounts for the first four letters.

I held myself up by entering BURSARIES at 19a and being convinced that “comic Eric” was an anagram of ERIC. Sorted now.
