My usual queries on this forum concern parsing but this week there were three clues where I cannot see how the definition fits the solution. I wonder whether anyone can enlighten me on the following. (I've put what I believe to be the definition in upper case.)

1a BRINGS ABOUT changes after company drills new men. (Solution is 'encompasses'.)

24d Related presidents supporting unwanted party's REPEATED GROWTH? ( 'Gooseberry bushes'.)

36d SYMPATHETICALLY UNDERSTOOD communist isle limited by international agreement, mostly over. ('Entered into'.)

As I say, I've no issues with the parsing - just the links between the definitions and the solutions.

A gooseberry is a third party that isn’t wanted and bushes were presidents of US.

Thanks Rekal but, as I said in my query, I had no issues with the parsing. What I'm trying to establish is how the definitions actually match the solutions. How does 'brings about' mean 'encompasses', 'gooseberry bush' mean 'repeated growth' and 'sympathetically understood' mean 'entered into'? The gooseberry bush clue has a question mark so it's probably quirky - possibly a reference to babies being found under gooseberry bushes? I can't see it though.
