A delightful puzzle - tricky but ultimately elegant.
As a linguist, I am dubious about the use of the first word in 31A. Applying that in the way I understand it gives a 9-letter non-word.

All done and very entertaining. But I don't get the clue to IV, which seems to comprise the last 6 extra words of the across clues. Any gentle hints please.

It's a definition plus 2 inside 3.

Thank you Mack. Having done some careful rereading I realise I was wrong as to what IV is.

I seem to be stuck at the final hurdle. I have a full grid and have completed 40 and 41 in a way that I think represents the venue.
I think I may have a mistake in my circled cells. I wonder if I need the 4th from the left to be an F but I have it as a solid S. If not I can’t make sense of the circles.
I am struggling to see which letter needs to be changed in the starred cells to make a relevant word.
Probably being dim but stuck for a couple of days at this point.

Aha. The result of posting. I didn’t bother to complete an earlier step.

You read the circled cells after following the earlier instructions.

I think barnacle may be referring to Chambers, not BRB.

Just completed it with a slight sense of unease because, although I’ve got all the missing letters in the down clues and the answer which enables me to interpret the first two and produce an intelligible clue, I haven’t actually solved that clue and got the 2,5,5 description of the ‘event’ (although I know what it is and when it occurred). But that doesn’t seem to matter. Have I missed something?

Other than that an enjoyable challenge. The final twist to produce what I assume is the correct word in the starred cells had me flummoxed for a while.
