Spent hours on this and thoroughly enjoyed. One short of a finish and it's driving me mad! Can anyone help with 28 down. I have *e*c*r*e*s. Nothing spring to mind and I wonder if I have gone wrong somewhere. (My first thought was The Curragh! It fitted but no sort of parse!) Many thanks

I think it’s ok, Rog. In Chambers it’s shown as a historical alternative spelling for a word meaning a slow, sentimental song.
