Quisling, it’s an anagram of the answer, so comes from the same fodder.

Chris,
4d. 2 (news) + 2 (account) both inside 4 down (in a fabric sense).
1d. Stretch and point are synonyms for the first and final word.

Chrise - I think that first two plus last two letters are (dodgy) word for “down”. Inside is 1 1 2.
Can’t fully parse 1d - why “point”?

Thanks Jono. I can’t see the wordplay really justifies it, with the positioning of translation, but heigh ho, I’m a martinet/Ximenean (delete as applicable). I consider a “cook” something like “Put off (5)” with the letters DE?ER

4D: I read it as 1,1 and a 2 inside a 4-letter word (noun) meaning ‘down’. Not sure if that is helpful enough-new to this forum.

Ianwil I think it’s a synonym. ‘At that point…’.
