Strange to see a word like 'normal' strain to describe the literal in the context of a puzzle like this. Literature is far richer than that. I see no need to judge alternative explanations in that way, even if they may well be wrong.

I agree that literature is rich and varied but this is just a Listener puzzle rather than a literary critique.

You used the word “natural” earlier which is pretty synonymous with “normal” (as per Chambers)

I guess it’s just different people having different interpretations - nothing strange about that

Thanks Primeprospect. I'll work on this info (but I've no idea how `windmill' in 34D fits in!) I'm determined to knock some sense into these last 4 parsings.

Ha! Now seen the light on 34D and 37D.
Suspect my dictionary may be falling short on 40A and 35D. Ho hum.
