2d - does it contain 7 or 8 letters?

Likewise 16d, 7 letter answer doesn’t fit. This is fiendish indeed!

Always safe to assume that there are no misprints. Can’t parse 1D though.

Funny how posting unlocks the little grey cells! Now to work out what on earth is going on.

So is it the case that the letter lengths given for 2d, 16d are correct?

I've done the NE and SW corners, leaving a thick diagonal strip empty

I have a completed grid, the two protagonists and the instruction. I also have 7 across clues (number count 188) and 4 down clues (number count 66) with extra words. Before I move onto the endgame, could some kind soul give me a hint to the parsing of 26a and 12d?
