Another tedious puzzle from Doc, not helped by the fact that 36a should be (4,2), not (6). I have several possiblities for several unclued solutions and it is unclear which is the right one in each case.

I've got most of the unclued helveticus by back tracking from Chambers, but can't see what 29d can be?

Chambers lists 11 possible answers for 12a and 8 possible answers for 29d. I can't see any reason to opt for a particular one in each case. Chambers does not seem to list anything for 14d. Could someone give me a nudge?

14 D is definitely in Chambers, I'm sure I found it earlier. Are all your possible answers matching the necessary definitions?

I think that the unclued across solutions must be read from right to left and the unclued down solutions from bottom to top. If so, it is clear what must be entered at 27a, 30a, 39a and 34d, but the other unclued solutions are less clear. I think that all my checked letters in 14d (or rather 14 up) are correct, but I can nevertheless find no word(s) which will read from bottom to top at 14d.

Thanks, Helveticus. Yes, that's right about the entry method - but there's more than that to solving the entries. My other unclued entries are ... clear, they're all itemised under the relevant words in Chambers (and 14 D is definitely there - I've just gone through the big long list of definitions). Have you got a paper copy of Chambers?

Thanks for the nudge Malone. I have it now. Needless to say, Doc did not mention Chambers...

Thanks, Helveticus. I felt the title itself was too much of a giveaway. I didn't mind Chambers not being mentioned, I was relieved it had nothing to do with Brewer's.

By my reckoning, 39a is one of the five unclued solutions which are of two or three words, but it does not seem to appear under the relevant word in my printed 12th edition of Chambers.
