Perhaps this is enough to get you there, given that you have the answers.
2: wordplay gives 3+1+2
11: &lit, with wordplay giving 3 around 1+3
16: wordplay gives (3+3) rev
28: wordplay gives 2+3
29: wordplay gives 5, with 1 exchanged for 3

For 20, I think that there is enough of a link for the definition to work. See #33 of the definition and #7 of the answer.

I think that there are two possible parsings for 28d. The one mentioned by RHSL is most likely what the setter had in mind.

Still don't buy 20, think they mean different meanings of that word. Hard to imagine a sentence where the two words could be interchanged.

To me they're not the same. One implies a discussion about a deep and emotionally charged subject (which could get quite animated). One implies a restrained and quiet conversation. It's in the same ballpark though so I'm sure it's correct. Just seems a bit loose to me.
