The yellow down entry that starts after the cell marked 26 has every letter checked. I think that was my way in.

Avidsodoku, I've no longer got my copy, but I had another quick look (online) at the puzzle. I remember the category starting at 6 D gave me enough letters to see what that category was, then I went hunting for A- F words for that. I moved on to working with the yellow ones where I had the most clued answers! It paid to be methodical...

Or, alternatively, if the clue included the word "reported"?

Does the answer to 70d have middle letters B and O? I ask because, while I'm very happy with my answer, it implies an unclued crosser starts with O, which is surely incorrect.

A word beginning O is fine if it's one of the two partanswers or taken as a pari (I can't rememner the preamble wording). I can't check 70 D, sorry.

You are correct about 70d. The unclued crosser is the second word of a two word unclued theme item, as mentioned in the preamble.
