Throck I, I agree with that interpretation of the preamble, and also with what Will says about the B word in the F group.

If it helps the word I have for the F word in the G group I’ve never heard of and is perhaps the reason for the “loose interpretation “ comment.

Xwordfan, that’s what I have, Chambers only has the L ending so I went with that.

Thanks, xwf and jono -- a loose interpretation of G indeed!

Thanks to Will37 and Xwordfan for your earlier replies.
Will, your posts 11 and 17 would explain the final paragraph.
I did find this an engrossing puzzle, in spite of a few flaws.

I made this much harder for myself by not reading the preamble properly. A recurrent problem for me. Despite the niggles discovered by others I thought this was cleverly put together. I still have some empties but they will fall into place.
40dn made me smile, as a young teenager I was smitten by Little Joe.

I enjoyed this puzzle, despite the forbidding acres of unclued lights ... but i could use a nudge on the second full word on the antepenultimate line, where I have *ide*.
Thanks in advance and Mrs Misty Archer to you all (5,9)

Gerba, that word is a real gift to setters. It's a small French...animal (to save overly generous thematic stuff). Its usual meaning is far more widely know...

Thanks Malone, that makes today a Bonus Day, or B-Day as some might have it ....

Hi, I've made some progress on this crossword; however, this unclued lights business is new to me.. Do you guys have any tips or hints on how to first approach finding the yellow categories and then the rest of the unclued lights? I find that there are so many unclued lights, I don't know where to start.

Appreciate any help.
