One of the best Speccie puzzles of recent weeks I thought.

We were told last year that Pabulum would no longer be setting regularly, but would “continue to appear from time to time”, so it is welcome to see him.

Indeed a good puzzle.

I have an answer for clue 8 down which fits the definition in the last word, but if it is correct, I cannot see the parsing. Grateful for a nudge.

There’s a Rastafarian expression for ‘we’ (in Chambers) which parses 1-3-1 in which you need to move the ‘a’ down.
That was also my last one in.

Many thanks Jono for the swift explanation of the wordplay - all clear now.

28a is another proud example of the Spectator showing off its boomer credentials. How is anyone under 50 meant to know which Rix they’re talking about?

Am stuck on 40 (S_A_I_G) and the parsing of 10. Any help appreciated ...
crossword seems to rely on intimate knowledge of Caribbean terminology which, sadly, I don't have)

40 two letter abbrev for law officer (not one I’ve seen often but it’s in Chambers) around 3,2 term for entrance.
10 Unionist is the last letter. The jumper is from Oz, capital as in THIS.

many thanks, jono - I had coucou for 10 - apparently a sort of Caribbean dish, so you saved my bacon ... and thanks for the Genius grid. I only came to this yesterday, having realised I was due to blog it and found it much harder than the Genius which only took a couple of hours.

Glad I could help, Prospero. My reference in post #1 is to 2647: “Pabulum’s last bow”, should you care to reference it in the blog.

The only other thing I know about Pabulum is his former sobriquet “Dumpynose”… an anagram of “pseudonym”.
