I now see “muscly pack” (nothing to do with us football) but can’t get 27 +A+O+T. Any hints?

Hi Ian,

27a - A + "leader in general" go inside/'defined by' 4 letter "waterloo" (as in 'massive defeat' - definition is "things going to pot" (yum yum 😉)

All your letters are correct.

Late to the party (!) as I was in bed and trying to sleep by midnight. I found this surprisingly easy for a Paul, despite my knowledge of the theme being far from encyclopaedic, and also very enjoyable, with much amusement to be had (and no puerile smut for once, not that I’m averse to puerile smut). Got 15,4 before 24,9,16, but obviously needed the latter for the parsing.
FOI 1d, LOI 1a, which is also my COD among too many contenders to list.
Thanks to Paul for cheering up a cold, damp morning.

It occurs to me that when 27,9,19 was won by part of 1a with part of the clue in 13a, it was held in Paul’s home town which he makes a habit of making reference to.

Nice one, jono. I’d completely forgotten that it was held there, but knew that it was Paul’s home town, which I think says a bit about my priorities!

A bit tougher to say the least than Paul's last prize offering and you have to take your hat off to him for even daring to go there with the theme.

As usual the first half took longer than the second. In fact took me a while to get going but 5d was my FOI and the NE followed on. LOI was 27a. COD I'm going 13a. Still not getting the nuances of 22a but there is clearly only one available answer.

Thanks Paul for an enjoyable distraction from events in Perth.

I'm quite pleased with how Paul has defined 22a, as I've always thought it was a profession rather than a race!

Proud of myself for getting this far on a theme which doesn't interest me, but the SE corner has defeated me. Any clues for 27a or 23d gratefully received. I believe I have the right first letter for 23d

Hi Neville,

For 27a see my @32

23d - 3 letter "culmination" inside 2 letter "killer blow" - definition is "martial art".
