This has kept me happy throughout the weekend, only made a breakthrough this morning when I twigged the middle bit of the "useful info". I was somewhat hampered by my 1996 copy of the book, which only has six of the references! (I think Father Christmas might be bringing me a new one).
Can I confirm that 13D might shorten to AFAP?

You have the correct modified entry, sloth, but I believe the wordplay leads to a reversal of things that run in mines (or cities, for that matter)

Sloth, the version in the reference work leads to ASAP... (The S being a synonym of clever or sting or well-dressed).

I've ordered a more up-to-date copy.
