I hear what you say about giving the clues. But in this particular crossword I don’t think they’d help.

Mshealey, thanks. 8 D is much easier if you lose an extra word right away... There's an outdated abbreviation for 'nurse' and the usual 'area 'and a usual 'ring'.

Quisling, thanks - and I realise that 14 A might only be well-known to me because my father-in-law used it frequently (too frequently!)

DFG2, thanks - and glad you're making progress. I like having the book, even if I don't consult it very often. There's meant to be a way to access it online, free, but I can't remember the details - and I don't think that's ideal, you sometimes need to know WHAT you're actually looking for!

Sorry all, I asked for help with 8 down but mistyped for 9 down my real nemesis.
I found the book as recommended and searched for my answer to Clue 9. But I couldn’t find anything that would fit the grid. Very fun puzzle apart from this last clue. Pointer please

Google "Book name - pdf - file - download", one space between each of the four parts. The below address will come up with the entire book to browse. Just bought one for £3 free P&P !

For 9d, make sure you have the right unmodified answer. An 8 letter anagram. The answer is a 6th century Arabian
