Er… I think I’ve solved this all but 3d and 11a but can’t make a coherent message from those missing letters I have identified. Not a clue what the ‘modification’ is and without knowing it I couldn’t parse all the down clues. Basically I’ve completely missed the point.

11a - This held me up too but suddenly made sense when I used a 2 letter abbreviation instead of the usual 1. Definition is "nothing"

3d - anagram

If you have all the extra letters you'll see 5 obvious words. Just Google them together and you'll see an well known 2 word reference, then look again at the down clues with those words in mind.

Thanks Aspira and, yes, the same as 23d - its a 3 letter "washing liquid" reversed/"thrown up" around 2 thjeme letters.

Brendon @23 - I don't think this counts as a spoiler as you've evidently already finished the puzzle but between your '5 obvious words' and a trip to Google, there's something else helpful you may not have noticed (or in fact needed to notice)... that's all I'm saying! 😁

I didn't correctly read your post and thought I was being admonished for giving spoilers. I was a bit confused because I couldn't really see what referring to 5 words and suggesting a trip to Google was actually giving away but decided to err on the side of caution and issue an apology anyway.

... and you're right - I haven't noticed that extra bit, but you know I'm now going to spend ages looking for it:-)

Ah! Got it - I had one of the extra letters wrong in the first word.

I did initially wonder how it fit with the rest but stopped once I'd got the reference.
