Struggling to parse 14, though I have the 8-letter entry. Even with 29 cells filled, a starting point and a finishing point I can’t make any sense of 4 obstacle courses. Tried various interpretations but none offers even a chink of light. A small flame of illumination in the darkness would be welcome.

14 parses as 2 initials and a 7 letter word for inventors, makers up of stories (unusual derivative). The first letter is extra. If you have the two word phrase the theme should be pretty clear, and none of the obstacle courses are obscure. The entry method could be considered thematic

Thanks, quisling. I confess I hadn’t thought of that kind of inventor. I have been staring at the 10-letter phrase, but all it does is to do what it says in my brain. Do I infer from your final sentence that the line I am to draw connects cells which are not adjacent? I am assuming Kings moves.

PDM just occurred! Not helped by two errors in important cells.

It was easy to go astray with the extra letters, jockie!
