Typical I think I have it now...

It's not diagonal

Many thanks to Luxor. Eightsome reels are oddly satisfying - and nowhere near as fiendishly difficult as the terpsichorean version (particularly when drink has been taken!). This was an excellent example and the endgame was very neat, reflecting the two word phrase very well. I’m lucky enough to have been on or by each of the “obstacle courses”.

I was away all last week so didn't come to this until this morning. I'm having problems starting to fill in the grid with the answers I have. I thought I'd cracked the corners but was I was left with trying to use letters which don't appear in LEND STERN CRY. A pointer as to what letter appears in each of the 4 corner squares would be much appreciated.

Hi alwayspuzzled, from the top left clockwise: L,N, R and D.

Thanks to Ginge's most helpful hint I've managed to complete the grid with the exception of two cells and find what needs to be highlighted. The extra letter in both 22 and 28 is proving elusive. Any hints/pointers to those would be much appreciated and then I can have a go at finding the 4 obstacle courses. My initial thought there was racecourses but that wouldn't be appropriate given the highlighting. I also thought about something in northern England and a similar structure in southern Scotland but drew a blank there.

Hi again alwayspuzzled, I no longer have the puzzle - just my worksheet and "working" grid (from the recycling) so partly from memory:
22. synonym (6) + alternate letters (3) with the extra letter in the latter.
28. 2 words from the clue with both losing first and last letters + 3 letter abbreviation with the extra letter in the abbreviation.

Thank you once again Ginge. I should have got the one at 28 but was looking at 22 in completely the wrong way. I think I may have located one of the obstacles (6 letters back and forth in the S-W corner) and now need to see if I can find the others. I also need to check I have all the other extra letters right.
