Really struggling with 22A and 23D …. I thought the latter was Uppity and 22A was torturous. I now think 20D is detach…. Which means the above are wrong! Any clue/help in the right direction is much appreciated

Your 23d is correct; see Malone's post (41) for 22a. For 20d, think of a synonym of 'diplomat', of foreign origin, and remove the last letter.
