[I've noticed recently several entries in competitions that are very similar to earlier ones. Have we stopped reading through the previous entries before composing ours?]

[Chris, if you mean my clue has the same structure as Tyke’s earlier one (dread in miner) I hadn’t noticed and I’m very happy to withdraw it]

[That was one, jono, but there's an even more similar pair earlier! See what tyke says about yours.]

Chris, when using anagrams or charades there are bound to be some similarities. It has usually been the case that the judge or voters decide. Most setters will defer to that as well if a later entry is similar. I've noticed that some setters don't read through previous entries, and some do. To each their own. I feel that there are enough checks and balances to take care of when these situations inevitably arise. Often a setter who hasn't noticed a previous similar entry spots it during voting anyway. My own judgment in this particular competition is that while the anagrams or charades may be the same, the surfaces are different enough. However, "My Sweet Lord" was clearly plagiarism.

He's so fine!
I wasn't suggesting plagiarism, just reusing a limited range of possibilities. But is it plagiarism if he had never heard it? Like not reading the earlier entries? :)
