If you don't mind me asking Malone, do you use a hard copy of the BRB or the phone app and, if so, Android of IOS?

Thanks,Brendan, glad I could help. I often forget about the names section and, of course, I didn't even bother looking on Saturday. I'm not as thorough (or as artistic) as you!

Brendan, it's only the hard copy for me. I've never bothered with any of the apps, I like browsing (old-fashioned browsing, turning pages).

Thanks from me too, Malone. Neither my Windows or Android apps have the appendices, but I'm not sure it would have occurred to me to look there for the parsing if they did.

Thanks, Mattrom - I'm always happy to have a reason to look up words in Chambers.

With the number of crosswords I do over the weekend I like the speed and convenience of the app, not least because of its anagram solver and word search function, but I do see where you coming from.

It reminds me of a time in Montreal, my partner and I were on a date with a colleague from work and her boyfriend. He started telling me, with real excitement, about a book called The Treatment by Mo Hader that he was reading. It turns out that he had literally never read a book, other than those he had to in school, until his early thirties, I know that's hard to believe but he swore it was true. He then went on to describe in minute detail the moment he first picked up a novel, basically just to peruse but, and I'm using his words now, it changed his life. He described to me the way the book, and in particular, the pages smelt and how they felt in his fingers, all the time with this look of pure bliss on his face. He continued in the same vain for the best part of the evening, waxing lyrical about his love of, mostly, hard back books and his joy was truly infectious.

This was back in the noughties but I remember it like it was yesterday.

... if he'd lived in time of the Great Depression in the US I'm sure he would have truly appreciated the selfless work of the ladies of the Packhorse Librarians that were the subject of a recent IQ.

Nice story Bren!

Regarding the dictionary appendices. If you’re using the Chambers App click on the icon at the top that looks like a square with an arrow pointing up, then click on “help”, then you will see “Dictionary Appendices” and other links such as “The Word Lover’s Miscellany”. Click on these and you get the extra sections that are in the physical books.

…having said all that I now see that it doesn’t include the “first names” section, so for that you do seem to need the book!

Jono, there is no such icon in my Android app. I can access a 'Help' section, but those appendices are not there.
