The theme...
Help with the theme may also be sought here. The help given should be fairly gentle in nature - juat a nudge, a pointer in the right direction, and definitely not anything that would spoil the puzzle for othrs. Any posts which, even inadvertently, reveal too much of the theme are likely to be removed.

A welcome relief after a couple of stinkers … although I’m not 100% sure I can justify the final version at 32A.

Rather quiet here! I've finished this (after a considerable struggle) but remain perplexed by 19 ac which in spite of having 4 checked letters makes no sense at all. Any discreet ideas?

Thanks to Awinger for a finely constructed puzzle. I rather liked the term used for the fifth character’s treatment of the sixth! However, I seem to have ended up with two abbreviations (32a and 36). Has the abbreviation I see at 36 in fact been adopted as a word in relevant circles?

At no stage is 36 an abbreviation, Jack, so you may have gone astray.
