Re 9 the answer is also a noun per Chambers in a specific legal sense.

7, add "lovers initially" back to the answer to get a sign or symbol often used in writing Portuguese. I think you need to read the Chambers entry to see what it signifies regarding Brazilian speech.

Well, I have now viewed the source and can work out the conclusion. Amazingly, this has never been seen in New Zealand in the 30+ years that I have been here.

As always, many thanks to Jono for the grid - much appreciated:-)

My initial reaction when reading the conundrum was that it seemed ultra vague, but when I typed it into Google... hey presto! There it was:-)

The conundrum also enabled me to get the last letter of 24d which was really causing me problems, even though I knew the extra letter and definition.
