As is so often the case with these themed puzzles, it can be so pleasing to learn all about new subjects and history.

I'd never heard of the PHLP but thoroughly enjoyed reading its Wiki entry:-)

A hint for 36a would be lovely! I only have gaps at the bottom of the grid.

36a - take second word in clue and replace "special" with 2 letter "church" then finally 2 letter "Queen no longer" - definition is "European" (includes extra word)

Re 12a, because I had the crossers I input the answer before I even read the clue properly, assuming it would refer to Polanski, not Kieslowski...

I agree totally with your comments at post 21 Brendan. Loved this subject of which I knew nothing.

Ditto to above comments. Love puzzles like this where one larns something new and fascinating. Bittersweet, though, when consider what the Orange Madman and his philistine party are attempting to do to American education...
