Morning all, I’ve got a full grid (apart from a few of the silvered lights… I’ve got the highlighted words, but they don’t suggest to me how to systematically change the four letter answers… can someone give me a nudge, please?

If you look at the 3-letter word that needs to be changed in 28 you may notice an equivalent difference between the first and second highlighted words and between the third and fourth. I discovered from wiki that this process has a name which is roughly clued by the title.
Sorry if this is a bit obscure.

It is a fairly simple systematic substitution but I had not heard of its name before.

I have a full grid, all the systematic substitutions in the 4 letter answers and in the 3 letter clues, but I cannot find a name for the process. Until I stumbled across what to do I found the majority of the 4 letter answers nearly impossible, ditto the 3 letter clues.

I just googled the general description of the process using terms that applied to the highlights as well as to the substitutions you have made. As the preamble says, it has a 6-letter name.

Thanks Ozzy, I had the Roman Emperor one, but yours certainly fits in with the title of the puzzle as mine didn't.

Thanks for the help but I’m afraid I still can’t figure it out… perhaps because I’m a bit confused with the three letter answers…
With 1ac… the unchanged answer is buried, which then after systematic changes becomes ?L?B.
Trying to follow how the first highlighted words changes into the second (or the third into the fourth) seems to lead me nowhere… or the significance of all the highlighted words and their origin…
Also, which is the word that changes in 23d, the 2nd or 3rd?
Many thanks!

It's the second word in 23 that changes to what you would expect to give the answer which is a short form.
If you know where the highlighted words come from, consider their positions in that context.
The answer to 1a is a homophone.
