Raggedy, the symbol is used for other words in the remaining five clues, including 42 and 43.

Mostly I Iiked this puzzle. If you're in doubt about the endgame it's because you've gone wrong.

I disapprove of the answer to 23a, which is a word which may never have been used outside dictionaries and crosswords.

Incidentally, a clue similar to 24d was used it Listener 4367.

iratus, I am inclined to agree because it took me so long to see! But the fact remains that it is in the BRB and therefore fair game.

Enjoyed this very much apart from the last two lines, which seem a bit pointless and spoil the representation to me - as someone said earlier they seem to turn the picture into the opposite of what happened.

Most unusually I have no parsing loose ends, so fair play to vismut for that.

Finding this rather slow going, especially `two words' cases.
Could someone nudge me forward on 1A, 26A, 32A please?
How dispiriting to not have 1A !

Oldwolfie,it's always good to give the clues ( and letter count and so on), especially when it's a slightly older puzzle. An dpeople who don't normally do the Listener might enjoy tackling a couple of clues...

Got 32A now. Got half an idea on 26A but can't quite force it to work. Still stymied on 1A.

Thanks, Malone---and I take your point. But these clues are (I think) thematic, so the clue doesn't relate too well to the answer---and not much at all to the letter count---which is hard to explain without giving away the required treatment.
I'll keep plugging away.

Oldwolfie, thanks - maybe the clues would work as a reminder for those who've done the puzzle? They could perhaps give you the necessary nudge.
