Gitto, if you know the author and his end, Wikipedia will give you the quote.

We can't be sure that we have the further two lines correctly identified although the candidates we have fits nicely.

A tough and well composed puzzle but most enjoyable in the end.

RHSL, I must have something wrong then, probably a 5 letter word that I think is in the quote, but everything else I have makes perfect sense.

There is a helpful Wikipedia article on the candidate which identifies his location

I'm still struggling with 23ac and 6d. I'm also worried about my answer to 24d- the final part of my entry isn't in Chambers, although its homophone is clearly correct.

Dylan: 6d is a straight clue - so if you have some crossing letters there can't be that many contenders. The final part of 24d is in Chambers as an alternative to its more familiar homophone

Many thanks to Vismut for a challenging but rewarding puzzle - - and a very satisfying graphic version of the “end”!

Frustrating! I raced through about 95% of the gridfill in record time (for me) but I still have a handful that I can't solve (1, 23, 29, 17, and 27). I have the quotation, I've highlighted the author, I know where most of the symbols are and what to do with them, and where to place the final 2 lines.

I've probably spent three times as long trying to resolve the above as I did actually reaching that point. But tempus fugit so I'll put it on the DNF pile. Nice one though, Vismut.

buzzb @18, thanks for that. Got the quotation now that I understand the instruction in the preamble and identified the correct additional words.
