Can anyone help with 5 dn: Admitted fish is eating starter of nothing ordinary (9). The answer is presumably “confessed”. The fish is “cod”, starter of nothing is “n”, so ordinary must be “fesse”. I don’t understand the last bit.

It's a heraldic term for an "ordinary". A bit obscure!

I’m trying to parse 8A. I have the answer and the first four letters but are the last 5 letters supposed to represent food? Feels very weak to me.

I think so.
Chambers has “supply of food” for that five letter word.
