Good fun I thought. Straightforward solve but teasing out the precise reference was a little more tricky (for me at least).

I would appreciate a hint for the unclued 31d, it’s all I have left to enter. I suspect I may gone wrong somewhere. Thanks for any help.

If you use the anagram in the preamble to tick off all the uncrossed letters the you should only have two possible letters left. If you can’t form an obvious word, then yes, you may have gone wrong…

“Appropriately placed” in the preamble is a very subtle, but rather nice touch.

Also took me a while to track down the quote and the name of its author. Interesting, as I share the latter!

It took me a few trial and error combinations of unclued entries in Google to find the quote. I'm surprised they didn't ask entrants, of whom I'm no longer one, to highlight the author just to confirm that they'd all got there.
