Yes, straightforward, but a fun theme, up my street. Had to resort to Chambers for the ‘pipes’ reference in 3d, though I think I’ve seen it before.

40A definitely gives the wrong nationality. To be fair perhaps its a sub's error

To be fair they are extraordinarily difficult to tell apart.

I’ve only just started this but 15ac really took me back in time. I remember this name from my parents’ collection of leather-bound books with gold lettering on the spines bought through some subscription book club that was popular in the 50s/60s. Not that anyone read any of them….they were just for show!

And the same crime author was referenced recently in 16A of 2704

And if I remember correctly, not so long ago a Speccie theme was several of that genre.
