I doubt very much if the subs are allowed anywhere near the text of a crossword. The setter (in this case the Editor, of course) sees a proof copy and is expected to check every detail. Like with Homer, nodding seems to have happened. Again.

If we're being picky, should 9d not begin with a definite article, although I realise there isn't room in a 14x14 grid.
