Loved 3d, not least because there is a moon of a well known solar system object with the ferryman’s name, given because it was a homophone of the discover’s wife. His intended tribute to her initially was refused as names were supposed to be classical until he found this elegant solution. (This is also why the moon in question isn’t pronounced properly).

Thanks to all for the tip about toggling the 'skip over' option.

Thanks for confirming, Bren and Jono. Incidentally, for anyone wishing to see what I can only assume is a quite elaborate resignation letter to the Guardian, have a look at Anto's (so-called) Quiptic. In addition to being crazily difficult, it ventures into quite unexpected territory for a family newspaper (1D).

Can anyone explain 4d to me? I think it's a word from the clue with one letter changed, is it really as simple as that? So the clue is really saying "think of a word that's a bit like xxxx"?
Also. Surprised that you are able to get answers checked online. In paper form,it's still a prize. If anyone wants to try for a £15 book token I'll give you the fax number. (No really, they've give a postal address and a fax number. Like its 1992!)

I sensed that 7d marks a milestone (see the puzzle number). Then I noted four solutions beginning with M.
So we have MMMM 7d.

Something Everyman likes to do.

Hi Ish,
4d is a double definition. Something like (as in approximately) and toughly (as rigorously). Then there’s the approximation of the answers which the whole clue implies and which Everyman acknowledges with a “?”.
