I also got 3D from the ferryman but, like Geeker, struggled to parse it long after completing everything else. Think I've finally done so now, but only if 'succeeded' is rendered as a single letter, which I presume is in the depths of Chambers somewhere. Something a bit less tenuous than that and it would have been my COD. As it is, I'll go with the simple but perfectly formed 10A.

Hi Phil,

Chambers does indeed list "succeeded" as a single letter abbreviation.

10a is one of those clues that works on every level - definition, wordplay, surface etc.

I think that abbreviation of succeeded is used in ancestry. I also note that Everyman correctly predicted the winner of Eurovision last week!

The timer thing annoys me because even if you turn the visible timer off in settings you still get given a time at the end which I’m not interested in seeing. In fact I like to take longer and parse as I go. That’s my little rant!

Hi Jono,

I agree with you on the time issue, especially as I don't consider a puzzle completed until I've parsed every single answer.

I enjoyed this, all quite straightforward. But, seeing as we're having our little rants, the online app annoys me. It behaves differently from the Guardian's (the new version of which ALSO annoys me because it no longer automatically follows on into the second part of a two word answer). The Observer app skips OVER any crossing letters so, even though we're a few weeks in, I keep typing the full word in only to look up and see that I appear to have typed rubbish into the grid. Rant over on yet another beautiful sunny day.

Hi Brendan

There is a well-known actress so-named, and coincidentally (or not?) she appeared in a film with a name not unrelated to the art of solving!

Simon9x, you can change that in settings where there is a toggle option for “skip over filled letters”.

Simon, you can turn that feature off in settings (top rt) though I don’t know if it’ll ‘remember’ next week.

Enjoyed that. 5D made me laugh.

Happy Sunday, everybody

Simond9x, You can change the settings so that it doesn't skip previously filled cells, but I suppose that would need to be done every time you "play".
Like Jono, I turned the timer off, only to have it pop up with a time at the end. I like to savour my crosswords, not race.

Barry, my experience is that your preferred settings are saved from one week to the next. I assume this is locally on your actual device.
