Last one in. 23d. Didn't help that I hadn't come across 20d. Guess that's a specialist job that you can't just muddle your way through.

27: How is this constructed?
I have a 9 letter solution that could be a literary publishing term.
"right for college" could be half of a famous educational stablishment.

Hi Mikey,

27a - "right for college" is a letter substitution instruction with "by passage being 2,7 - but it sounds like you have the right answer

Hi everyone

I didn't intend to try and do this today, but filled in the top half very quickly (lots of anagrams), but then struggled with bottom half. I've not had much time so cheated on a few and can't parse or fully parse several, though reading through the thread has shown me how.
Not fully parsed: 12ac,17ac, 25ac, 26ac, 27ac, 8d, 17d, 20d and 21d. I was hoping to embolden the ones I still don't understand, but can't seem to do that.

I addition, I don't think 14ac means ancestors.

Must get on with more chores. I will be travelling home next Saturday, so even less chance of trying my luck. Unlike most of you, I only tackle the crossword on Saturdays.

FOI 1d, after getting in a muddle with 9ac. LOI 21d. COD 6D and 24ac

12ac - last 2 words are the definition. The word just before the definition provides the last 2 letters of the solution. The first 4 words of the clue provide wordplay for the first 5 letters. I had to look her up. Irish, from Kildare.

25ac - first 2 letters a well-known abbreviation. Last 5 another discovery for me. An Italian musical term, not for the fans of cheerful melodies.
