I've still no idea about this alternative way of reading the Acrosses. Your suggestion, rhsl, assumes that one has a good smattering of Downs entered, and I only have five so far. Any tips for 4dn or 5dn would be helpful

Thanks

Hi Dylan,

4d - the jumbled answer is a 2 letter muscle followed by a reversal /'lifting' of 4 letter concrete - definition is "suitable for growing"

5d - jumbled is 3 letter "Scots pass" (I was able to guess this by imagining the usual version being said with an accent) followed by 2 abbreviations - definition is "material" (one I'd never heard of)

Ah. Having got the gist of things from the first 3 lines and several letters of the title from the downs I examined my copy of the work (and a fine thing it is).

Bink! Done.

(Still haven't worked out the MacGuffin with the across clues although some of my solutions fit quite happily).

Hey ho, on to the Inquisitor.

Overseas at present but managed to get the hotel reception to print this off. Got to the stage of knowing what was going on so the rest of the grid fill would have been easy then the printed copy disappeared (I blame the maid).
I can’t be bothered to go through the palaver of getting another copy printed so will give up now.
One query though. I remember one cell has a clue number 19. I thought this odd as there were only 18 down clues. Is my recollection correct and if so what does it mean? I wondered if it might point to something in the completed grid but I can’t check that now.

The 19 is just an error

Hi granama1,

For me, the "MacGuffin with the across clues" was the beauty of this puzzle. Very clever indeed.

Obviously not alone in completing downs (with only a few of the Across) - filling grid - then revisiting to parse rest of across clues ..
My only niggle was 14D which I see was mentioned/answered *17/*18. Can't find it in my BRB under the current spelling ...Am I looking in the wrong place? ...

Yes crates, try looking for the first 4 letters in the BRB and the ref to Ed. It does come up on my old CD of Chambers but only on the search, not in the entry itself.

Thanks raggedy (and previously brendan) - how did I miss this entry! ... It is in my BRB ... Think when I originally looked and saw it wasn't there, I just moved to the current spelling ... 'slap on the wrist to me' ... Ironically in another dictionary appears as archaic spelling of 'a person invited to stay overnight' ... thanks guys ...

Cleverly done, but for me it doesn't work as a crossword puzzle - many of the across clues seem ungettable, but from a certain point the grid fill is too easy.
