There are two possible ways to enter it, Brendan, one of which is jumbled

Many thanks Dodgepot, I had considered that but eventually discounted it because the wordplay in the others is so precise. Should have given it more thought.

Slow progress...anyone care to throw me a steer on 1d?
Peer eject ex-pupil after women's supporter raised brawl (6).
I'm thinking brawl is definition and women's support is usual 3 letters but not getting anywhere.

Hi lumen, you're on exactly the right lines. Focus on the third (hyphenated) word of the clue. Quite often seen in cryptics.

Hi Lumen,

1d - you're right about the 3 letter "women's support" with the rest being a 5 letter "peer" minus the usual 2 letter abbreviation for "ex-pupil" - definition is "brawl" but not it's usual meaning.

I wasn't familiar with the theme. Hit a brick wall for ages then the PDM happened. Very clever clues, I thought. Delightful theme which I'll be investigating further.

I'm encouraged by simond9x - the PDM had better be pretty good because this puzzle has been less than interesting so far. I have a 5-letter entry for 14, but there is no word in BRB, although it has loads of Ed's words. And I can't begin to pick 13 apart - I assume the def is the final 2 words, but that's as far as I've got. 13 Acrosses have yielded absolutely nothing.

Hi Cockie,

14d - it is in Chambers but only as a form of another word, not in it's own right. I worked out the letters and assumed the anagram function would show the word but it didn't. I then guessed what I thought the most obvious spelling and there it was.

I had found what I suspect is the same answer for 14dn being discussed but have no idea how to arrive at the properly jumbled form based on the second half of the wordplay—seems it could be interpreted in more than one possible specific way.

Cockie- thanks for mentioning 13d which has puzzled me. Your post made me look again & now I see that the def is the first word.
