Thanks Bowergirl, I got all that, including the man who was glad to see his Sherpa, just don’t see how it is supposed to fit together

Nobody seems to have mentioned 21D. I have h-d-l and if that's right I'm still baffled.

23a is hidden word Heleninglos so will give you the last letter of 21d.

With sincere apologies for dimness, I’m tearing out what little hair’s left over 12A and the previous responses in explanation. I’ve still absolutely no idea what word sounds like the answer and relates to an approaching day (the last three letters of the answer maybe) , but where do the first two letters figure in this? Put me out of my misery!

……… and while I’m at it ….. after finishing in just under an hour, I got a pop-up congratulating me on completion in 6 minutes 36 seconds. If only(!), but is this a common glitch?

12 is a homophone ("did you say") of a 2 word phrase. First word is 4 letters for "approaching" [="near"]. Second word is 3 letters for "day's forerunner".

Timings: probably a software bug. I'm just grateful for a free online solving page.
