This is tough. I have a full grid other then the unch in 11a, as I cannot solve the clue, nor see where the extra letter can come from. Also, cannot parse 8d (well I can, but not with an extra letter). Also the name (BTW, a proper mouth fill) only has 37 letters, but 42 clues minus the 4? without extra letters totals 38? Currently I have 9 targets in my grid, but I think there should be one more.

23a has no extra letter, as has no clue.

Gitto, you are right about the letter count. I found two spellings online, and Serpent is using yet another. A double letter in one part of the name is also doubled up in another part

11a is a mystery to me.
Remit I assume is the period in prison.

Gitto, in 11a the definition is the first word. “Disheartened” applied to the following word, and “retrospect” has the usual effect.

Gitto, I agree that 8d does not appear to generate an extra letter. However there is a way it can squeak one out. Maybe “outstanding” is doing double duty. Think of bond ratings in global markets.

Thanks gp, all finished now. I couldn't find that spelling, and not for the lack of trying. The problem with the associated clue is that it works with and without that extra letter as "in" could be "I" in its own right.

Lumen, I know 23 is unclued, but there are 42 clues. If you count 23 as a clue, then there would be 43.

Agreed gp re 8d - but that therefore has the same problem as the other clue (and means outstanding is doing double duty (& lit clue?))

22 and 25 la both yield N's , so alternative or wrong spelling of name must be involved.

I can’t see any issue with 11a.
Period in prison = time
Disheartened jaywalker = jr
In retrospect = rjemit
.. which is a word meaning “brief” when you take out the spare J. Maybe your brain is locked on to “brief time” or brief meaning short, blocking you from the other meaning?
