On maybe I've chosen the wrong letter to miss out of 17d... Will give this more thought.

This is one of the 6 clues that contain an extraneous word. Defn is first two words, in the sense of "promote again". Then as follows: a 4 letter word for "understand", followed by a word for "poetry" surrounding the usual abbreviation for "time". I assume you have found what letter is missing in the defined word.

Another clue with an extraneous word. Defn is first word, and then a 2- letter UK phone network plus usual abbreviation for "right" included in the final word. I had to Google for the phone network, as I have not lived in the UK for 30 years.

Thanks BuzzyBee. I was on completely the wrong track trying to think of words like bitrate. It all makes sense now.

Great little puzzle. All done here except any clues with 21d? I think all my crossing letters are correct.
