Just started. Clues 2, 8, 9, and 23 show numeration of 10, 5-4, 13, and 10 but grid shows 2 letters short not just one letter. I have to figure out the instructions correctly, first.

Lippu, the entry may omit "one letter ... wherever it occurs", so may be 2 letters short.

Well, I have clearly cracked this, but I cannot find a single word in any clue whose initial letter is the 4th letter of the writer. Anyone?

I think I figured out the instruction.

If the missing letter from wordplay occurs twice, both are removed, as in 9d. I still don't have 2, 8, and 23. All other answers I have miss only one letter.

That is what I have circled

If right, I have the author. But which one? I have 18 of the 26 letters - can't make out the four connected items. How can there be a undefined answer.. all clues have definitions, though wordplay can produce gibberish... Need a break.
