All done now thanks to a significant hint from J.

All done. The message was clever but I'm still not convinced by the wordplay in several clues. Although it was harder, I preferred last week's puzzle which left no room for doubt.

can anyone explain why my vowels clash? (using capitals doesn't help)

Having wasted a lot of time on last week's puzzle I would have liked a straightforward one this week, but not to be.

I at least managed to complete most of the grid but the endgame is clearly above my pay grade.

Intrigued to see the solution in three weeks time....

Dear all,

I know what I am about to say will attract some opprobium, but as a decent - not top level - solver, I thought this puzzle stank.

I'm not clever enough to complete the Listener each week but in the weeks I can it feels very satisfying.

This puzzle felt to me like it excluded anyone like me who was not equipped or educated enough to be able to deal with the endgame.

Who is the Listener crossword for? A super-educated elite clique?

Please Listener setters make your puzzles more available to smart people who aren't super-educated.
