All clues solved and extra words understood. I have a suitable entry for the top line of includes but struggling with the second... I am sure it will hit me at some point soon! Another in the series of amazing crosswords we have been treated to this year.

Scratch that, my top row of the unclueds isn't right. I am confident I know what I need to do but can't get the words quite right (I don't know what the message should be, but i know pretty much how to get there - right letters wrong order or something like that)

Permutating the extra words does not make any sense to me, although they possibly have the look of a classic language. Even so, I can't make anything coherent. I hope this request is not too specific for this platform, but could I be on the right track?

Right track - permutate just means anagram them

0pt0, I seem to be on the same track as you are - my first 4 (possibly 5) permutated words are all the same length. I have drawn 6 lines, one of which is IAW the preamble - then I am stuck.

Some further googling has finally led me to the solution to my problem, happily I was on the right track!

Another very enjoyable puzzle here, thanks Quinapalus!

I found it quite tough filling the top of the grid and was then left pretty puzzled about how to make any progress on the endgame. I had a couple of extra words wrong though and eventually spotted the start of the message - a very nice finale from there. The unclued rows can be found in the relevant wikipedia page. My only quibble was that the spelling of the location seemed to differ to the one on Wikipedia.

I was impressed by the grid structure given the constraints and thought there were some nice clues.

Gitto - the first four words are the same length, the fifth is not. If your first four words are correct (sounds like they are) they should give you a fairly clear lead for how to find the remaining words.
Struggling to fully parse 9dn. Presume that "bytes" and "a word" are significant but can't see how to generate the other two letters?

Gitto, you may be including the empty cells in the unclued entries when drawing your lines. That would be a mistake. The parenthetic phrase in the second sentence of the preamble is designed to exclude them.

Actually, reading your post again, I don’t think you have, so ignore me!
