I solved this at warp speed (usually do the puzzle on Saturday evening US time) and couldn't spare time for full parsing.
Good puzzle, in the high rank of Everymans. Mostly easy, but a handful of brain-teasers.
Stylistically, it doesn't seem all that much like Alan IMO. Perhaps a collaboration or guest setter?

I rarely read the comment sections of 225 posts. I'm permissive w.r. to cluing and find the comments dominated by persnickety complaints. But I thereby miss out on occasional setter contributions.

Not only can I not solve 16D despite all the help here, but I can't understand the help!! What does &lit mean? And have I led too s/heltered a life to understand 5D
