michpunk - I had the same experience, figuring out the theme before I'd solved any clues (though I had a variation with 3 different items in mind). As you say, luckily that didn't detract at all from the enjoyment of solving the rest!

I'm ashamed to admit that - perhaps buoyed up by that early PDM - I was utterly convinced right from the start that 5A was HOBO NEST, despite it (unsurprisingly) not being in any dictionary other than Urban. But it seemed to fit the clue so well...

In my mobile versions of Chambers the relevant definition (for the answer) is listed fifth.

Thanks, michpunk. I was a bit slow then. I was looking for a one-to-one correspondence between the two words and forgetting there were other words in the clue.

Thanks, that’s clear now. It was the unusual meaning of ‘neat’ that was the problem.

Usual check in from me. Full grid and see the connection of the items but stumped on the ‘symmetrically opposite columns’.

Ws, easiest way to proceed is to write the letters from rows without a “crossing” column by column, putting left next to right, second left next to second right, etc. You should then see words appear reading down adjacent columns

I was wondering if anyone has received their Listener stats yet?

No, I haven't although I mailed off an sae with my solution on 22 March. The delay may be related to the fact that the dinner - of which a report is usually included with the stats - was later in the month than in recent years.

Many thanks Dodgepot for your response. I have to say that I'm not fond of grid stares and that this one proved particularly difficult. However it evidently appeals to some.

Are any regulars going to the AZED Oxford lunch? I'm down to do a short tribute on behalf of over division solvers so would be pleased to meet anyone in person.

In the same boat still waiting for the stats 18 days after requesting them by e-mail. I am reluctant to send a third request - no doubt a very busy time for the marker but I'm hopeful they will be sent in due course.
