Now got a full grid, onwards to the end game!

The end game certainly gave me a headache. I thought that the word relating to one of the items is a little vague, but the BRB confirmed that it is fully acceptable. Although I was confused by what was going on for quite a while, this has turned out to be a very clever and neatly constructed puzzle. Well done Apt.

Son1ofrover1, look closely at the Chambers entry for your answer to 12.

A bit tough to get going but then a pleasant afternoon, sitting in the sun and solving this impressive puzzle: a tour-de-force of construction. I like puzzles where a computer can't always help.
Agreed about 12a RHS; it's the sole dodgy clue, I think. The 'Yippee' Yahoo' clue made me laugh - so clever!

The 17a RHS clue also great.

Really enjoyed this, have the grid, can see the theme. Haven't the faintest idea what Im looking for in the symmetrically opposite columns.

Will continue to ponder but hopefully not to obscure to spoil a so far excellent puzzle. No hints yet please.

Now figured out the columns. Very nice indeed.

Since this puzzle has GWIT written all over it, and I'm not good at cold solving, my first instinct was not to bother.

Anyhow I've given it my best shot but have run into the following brick wall:

(1) I've solved 18A
(2) I've solved both 15D clues
(3) I've solved one of the 17A clues, but it's not consistent with the letters I have in the grid from (1) and (2).

Moral of story: always follow first instinct.

Hold on a sec .... 18A is a crossing, which has to go in a thematically appropriate direction.

Not giving up just yet...

I don't think it's GWIT at all. Once one has filled the grid - or nearly filled it - and have the word from the extra letters, it's pretty obvious what this is about and what Apt was thinking, including what the 'relevant sides" are.

I think it's fair and unambiguous. If you recognise the theme from the thematic items you should be fine.
