I didn't watch any of the series, so had only vague idea of the theme - I should have followed the pointer at 27d.

I had a brief exchange of messages with Hamish in another forum. This puzzle was intended to coincide with the final of the theme show originally scheduled for today. However, the bbc moved the date due to football! Hence 27d had to be changed to refer to “next” Saturday which wasn’t the original intent.
