I had exactly the same thought about 22d as you, jono - I remain uncertain about the parsing, and part of that uncertainty is as to whether it’s a double (reading the last 3 words as a single element) or a triple (reading them as 2 plus 1).
Unless Soup comes along or someone else provides a convincing explanation one way or the other (or indeed yet another explanation), I guess I’ll never know for certain!

Chris, I’d say the theme is not relevant to solving. A couple of the answers do relate to it but mainly the theme is reflected in the clues.

chrise - to clarify, the answer isn’t thematic, but the clue has a surface which is more amusing if you know about the theme. In other words, knowledge of the theme isn’t necessary to solve it (though it does require a bit of fairly easy GK). Sorry to have misled, and I do think you should persist!

buzzybee - I (eventually) parsed 16d as you did. I’m sure it’s correct and I rather like it. I think I’ve seen something similar before, but can’t be certain.

i don't know - first extra one i've done is 9a and the definition is a very different method from the answer!

I think 9a works if you think of the definition as a verb, chrise.

that's my point, rogissimo - filter and the answer are different methods

12a wiki tells me the dog is pre-school australian. how obscure is that? also what is "refusing" doing?

But the process is a filtering process, isn’t it, even though the result isn’t called a filter coffee? ‘
